De Back-Meijer (HWM Motorsport) extend points lead with win at Spa

It was a perfect day, although cold, for Jurriaan De Back and Paul Meijer at Spa: the Dutch pair of Hans Wijs Motorsport took their second pole and second win of the season to extend their lead in the standings to 13 points over their direct rivals, Pietro Delli Guanti and Matteo Luvisi, the Italian pair of FAEMS by Ebimotors, who finished second after an equally strong race.

The gap between the two contenders was minimal both in qualifying (where Meijer obtained his second pole of the season and the eighth in a row) and in the race, which clearly indicates how competitive the two pairs are. Third were Ludovico Longoni and Simone Iaquinta (ZRS Motorsport).

Alejandro Barambio and Borja García (GT Corse) took their second success in Pro-Am, strengthening their lead in the class, ahead of Bernardo Pinheiro-Flávio Sampaio (LMR Motorsport) and Lars Zaenen-Fgani Salubre (HWM).

HWM rounded a perfect day with the win in Am of team boss Hans Wijs and Rick Van Zijverden, ahead of returnee Evgenii Leonov (Volcano Motorsport) and Giacomo Giubergia-Cássio H. de Mello (GDL Racing). The class sees a perfect tie at the top of the standings, between three pairs: Wijs-Van Zijverden, Giubergia-de Mello, and Navarrete-Pedrera (Tsunami), today fourth.

The race saw a perfect start by Meijer and Delli Guanti, sitting in the first row, with the Dutchman (who this weekend also competes in the Nürburgring 24 Hours) managing to build a gap never higher than 5 seconds. García was third in the opening laps before being passed by Iaquinta, with Wijs in fifth ahead of Barros, Zaenen, and Stifner. Mechanical trouble, instead, slowed the LMR car of Leandro Martins, as happened in Portimão.

Exiting the driver change phase, the gap between De Back and Luvisi was 2.5 seconds. Then a beautiful fight started between the two young guns. The gap was marginally reduced, then increased, then reduced again, but Luvisi could never threaten De Back directly, who resisted well despite tyre consumption. Eventually, 0.9 seconds separated the two under the flag.

Longoni cruised to third without much trouble ahead of Barros, Laurini, and Van Zijverden, who kept the success in Am despite a 10-second penalty inflicted on the #5 Porsche for a pit stop infringement, ahead of Leonov and Giubergia, who did not lose third despite a spin at La Source late in the race. Seventh overall, Barambio took the win in Pro-Am, ahead of Pinheiro and Salubre.
