The GT Cup Europe arrived at Spa and found the typical Spa weather sequence of overcast skies, sunshine and light rain all in one day, and a constant factor, very cold temperatures, throughout the Friday of free practice.
The other common denominator was that the HWM Motorsport Porsche of championship leader Jourriaan De Back and Paul Meijer was the fastest in both sessions, the first one on a drying track and the second on dry tarmac. With all contenders fastest in FP2, the best lap time of the day for the Dutch duo was 2.20.659. With Paul Meijer having to share himself between Spa and the Nürburgring 24 Hours, it was De Back taking most of the workload today, but the 18-year-old proved to have solid shoulders. “It’s almost home race for us, so I know Spa well and in all conditions”, he said.
Second-fastest was the ZRS Motorsport car of Ludovico Longoni, here associated with Simone Iaquinta, 1,574 seconds behind, while third (and fastest among Pro-Am pairs) were Alejandro Barambio and Borja García (+2,085), right ahead of Matteo Luvisi-Pitro Delli Guanti (FAEMS by Ebimotors, +2s224).
In his return to the series, Evgenii Leonov (Volcano Motorsport) was fifth and took the first spot in Am (+2s401), ahead of local hero Lars Zaenen and Fgani Salubre (HMW Motorsport, +2,666).
